Baroque Dance for Musicians Workshop
Saturday 12th November 10:00-11:30am
Herb Greedy Hall Marrickville
Have you ever come across a Menuet in your repertoire and wondered, what tempo should this be played at? Or perhaps you’ve chanced upon a Chaconne and thought, what could the phrasing be?
If yes, then this workshop is for you! I’m a strong believer in physically doing something to learn. There are only so many sources we can read or words we can follow from our teachers or conductors. This workshop aims to give you the tools to understand baroque dance music from a dance perspective.
The workshop is specially designed to introduce musicians to basic baroque dance movements. Dance styles were such an integral part of baroque music composition and it is important for musicians to understand how dance can influence music. The workshop is open to musicians of all levels but those with an interest in 18th-century French style music (so yes, this does include Bach’s cello suites) will find it especially beneficial.
This 1.5 hour workshop will cover posture, accented and preparatory movements, basic step-patterns, the Bourée and the Menuet.
This workshop will be a taster for the Baroque Dance for Musicians class series which will run Tuesday evenings from Term 1 2023. Those who are super keen to dive into this wonderful repertoire are encouraged to also attend the Baroque Ballet class series which will run after baroque dance for musicians every Tuesday.
